Kettledrums go way back in classical music, which has multiple roots in the music of the church and of the royal court. Royal court music included outdoor music, like Handel's "Music for the Royal Fireworks," 1749, and apart from the military connection, drums helped keep everyone playing together. By the late 1790s, timpani were featured in concerts, and though there were rarely more than two, Carl Christian Fischer composed a Symphony with Eight Timpani. A couple of timpanists toured, playing large batteries of kettledrums, but the more usual practice was a pair of drums with…

Two great novels from the first half of the 20th century described different views of the future based on what their creators saw in their own time, and both books, despite being deliberately exaggerated, managed to quickly foretell certain aspects of modern life just a few generations after the authors lived. In Aldous Huxley's 1932 novel "Brave New World," the world in 2540 reproduces in laboratories with fetuses divided by caste. People are bred for their occupations. They are brainwashed through sleep hypnosis to have the views they are supposed to have.  The family…

Joe Paterno, who coached 409 football wins and two national championships before being fired by Penn State for not doing enough about an assistant coach's alleged sexual assault, died Sunday morning of lung cancer. But his death was reported Saturday night, 14 hours before it actually happened. A student Web site called Onward State reported Paterno's death based on two sources confirming an internal email at the university. The Web site founder said the email was later found to be a hoax. But by then major news media, knowing the end was near, had picked up the story. One online…

The Hawaii Legislature is notorious in the business community for fiddling with local business operations. Every session there are proposals to create expensive new requirements for employers. One requirement - health insurance for workers - has been great for workers and now seems to be a significant benefit that helps find good employees, and the only employers who wish they didn't have the requirement are those who delude themselves into thinking that without it they would get employees who were just as good for the same wages. But there are also annual attempts to legislate what…
  • Music Post: Remembering Etta James and "At Last"

Etta James died today of leukemia. She would have been 74 next Wednesday. The blues singer was best known for her 1960 rendition of "At Last," one of the few songs used in mass media as often as Bruddah Iz's "Over the Rainbow," and equally a part of our mass consciousness. She was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles to a 14-year-old mother, and her father may have been the pool player known as Minnesota Fats. (Friends said he was; he told her he couldn't recall.) As a teenager she was part of a doo-wop group which had a hit record in 1955 and toured with Little…

While in Vegas this week, I attended Cirque du Soleil’s tribute show, “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour.” As I exited the Mandalay Bay arena on closing night, I contemplated which tribute show — “Beatles LOVE,” “Viva Elvis” or “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour” — I liked best. With Cirque’s announcement that it was to close at the end of 2012, “Viva Elvis” wasn’t in the running, so it came down to The Beatles vs. Michael Jackson. Both “LOVE” and “Immortal” are phenomenal…

I was a little surprised “The Descendants” won Best Motion Picture in the drama category in Sunday’s 69th annual Golden Globes. The movie, based on the novel written by Kaui Hart Hemmings, beat out “Hugo,” “The Ides of March,” “The Help,” “Moneyball” and “War Horse.” (Read more in the New York Times here.) I wasn’t surprised because it wasn’t good. Far from that. In fact, the movie, about a Hawaii land baron and his troubled family, was surprisingly good, very realistic and well executed. And I…
  • Have dogs, will travel to Kona

It sounded like a bad idea. We wanted to see if our dogs, Sunny and Indy, could travel. So we booked our flight to Kona to visit family — and made reservations for the dogs, too. It was the first time either of us had traveled with pets, dogs or otherwise, and we weren’t sure what we’d be in for. First off, it costs more. On Hawaiian Airlines, we paid an extra $35 per dog each way. So that amounted to $140 for both dogs, both ways. Which wasn’t too bad. Then, you have to figure out a way to get them into enclosed bags and under the seat in front of you. Two words: Rescue…

I was really sad when HK Restaurant closed in September after more than 30 years. No more teri hamburgers, fried noodles or its popular Yum Yum Chicken. HK’s was one of my go-to spots before UH volleyball games or after the beach. But in its place opened another plate lunch place, this one serving your standard staples — hamburger steak, chicken katsu, beef stew — with a few items you don’t often see at this kind of establishment, including cold ginger chicken, spaghetti with meat sauce, pork and peas, and roast turkey with stuffing. • Ozoni and other New Years traditions I don’t get

    Catherine E. Toth
    3 Jan 2012 | 11:31 am
Every New Year’s, our family always eats two things: Hawaiian food and ozoni. The Hawaiian food tradition started with our neighbors, a Hawaiian family, would kill and imu a pig and make a feast of foods including poi, lau lau, chicken long rice and lomi salmon. They would bring a box full of food for us on New Year’s and we’d take them a whole ham and baked beans. Then we would eat ozoni soup, a Japanese dish flavored by dashi and contains mochi, leafy veggies, shiitake mushrooms, carrots and daikon. (We don’t put in chicken or pork, like other families.) • Eight things for Chinese New Year

    Melissa Chang
    22 Jan 2012 | 4:40 pm
One of my earliest and favorite memories of Chinese New Year is being at my popo’s house when she was making gau, the traditional brown sugar mochi. It would take her all day, kneading the dough on the floor before putting it into huge stockpots for steaming. When it was ready, she would pour some into a coffee cup for me — a molten, caramelly, pudding-like treat. I was acting as taste tester, which wasn’t really a job because it was perfect every time. On the other hand, my mom would make jai, known as monk’s food, and for some reason each year’s batch would come…
